Wild Fiction

Chapter 46

Epsom police station was indistinguishable from any other English police station. It consisted of a counter with a uniformed officer of some apparent rank behind it. Every member of the public entering the station meant more work for them. The fictionals came through the door like a comedy act, pushing each other and all wanting to speak at the same time. The WPC behind the counter looked up and seemed unconcerned by the state of Genevieve or James, both covered in scratches, bruises, and blood.
‘We’d like to report a find,’ Conrad announced arriving at the counter first.
‘We’d like to speak to Sergeant Grovijohn,’ Genevieve said and Conrad scowled at her.
‘We don’t have an Sergeant Grovijohn here,’ the woman behind the counter said. She had a pleasant round face. Her small bat-shaped ears were poking out from her scraggly blonde hair. The nametag on her lapel read WPC J. WAKEFIELD.
‘Well Constable Wakefield, could you please tell me at which station he works,’ Genevieve enquired.
‘Just a second,’ she replied and tapped on the keys of the computer in front of her. ‘There’s no one by that name in the British Police Force. You did say Grovijohn didn’t you? G.R.O.V.I.J.O.H.N?’
‘Yes that’s right,’ Genevieve knitted her brow and turned to the others. ‘I’m sure that’s what he said his name was. What about special branch or secret service or something like that?’ she asked turning back to WPC J. WAKEFIELD.
‘I’ve searched through everything and there’s no Grovijohn,’ WPC J. WAKEFIELD replied. ‘What’s the find you want to report?’
‘It’s actually nothing,’ Conrad said glancing at each of the others in turn. ‘When we know what we’re talking about, we’ll come back.’
WPC J. WAKEFIELD looked at Conrad, her soft features icing over. ‘There are heavy penalties for the withholding of information that should be brought to our attention,’ she said.
‘We’re not withholding anything,’ Conrad said. ‘We just don’t want to waste your time.’ He was already half way across the small room towards the door. The others followed him outside.
