‘As long as it takes,’ he answered giving her a little smile.
She turned away from him without returning the smile, walked over to the fridge, and opened the door. ‘Go on then,’ she said into the fridge. ‘I don’t want to keep you from doing whatever it is that you have to do.’

Chapter 48

At the police station, Genevieve handed the card over to WPC J. WAKEFIELD. ‘This is the Sergeant Grovijohn I was talking about,’ she said. As soon as WPC J. WAKEFIELD saw the card, she stood up from her chair.
‘We’re going to need to talk to both of you,’ she said and disappeared shortly only to reappear at the other door in the room which she held open for them. She showed them to a small windowless room and asked them to sit at its solitary table.
‘Someone will be with you shortly,’ she said and closed the door on them. There was a click as a key turned in the door.
‘Blimey, that’s a bit of a change in attitude,’ Conrad said his voice resonating off the walls.
A tall man wearing a dark elegantly cut two piece suit entered the room. His straight black hair was gelled back and razor cut. ‘I’m Jerry Ogilvie,’ he said a smile breaking out from under his neatly trimmed moustache. He shook Genevieve’s hand first and then Conrad’s. A red silk tie, decorated with pictures of player’s masks, covered the buttons of his white shirt. The shiny black inner lining of his unbuttoned jacket reflected a rainbow of dark reds and greens. He sat down and rested one arm on the table, his long fingers hanging limply at the end of his hand. His fingernails, neatly trimmed and clean, shone in the harsh neon light hanging above the table.
‘What can you tell me about this card?’ he asked still smiling. He brought his other hand up from under the table and flicked the card into the middle of the Formica surface. It lay within reach of both Conrad and Genevieve.
‘Well...’ Conrad started but Genevieve cut him short.
‘Sergeant Grovijohn and PC White stopped by the house in their search for two escaped convicts. They left the card with me and said I should call them if I ever had any information for them.’
‘And do you have any information about these two escaped convicts?’
‘We saw them today.’
