Wild Fiction

Genevieve and Rebecca turned and waved at you. You, the reader, you have been with them for so long and lived through so much with them.
‘You can close the book now. It’s all over, thank you for making us immortal,’ Rebecca said flashing you a perfect row of white teeth. ‘We want to leave you with the following picture in your mind: We’re walking off out of the hospital hand in hand. It’s like the end of the best film you’ve ever seen. As we walk down the street the camera pulls back and you see people walking past us on the pavement. On the streets, you see red double-decker buses interspersed with cars and black cabs. Credits roll up the screen and the curtains draw across the front of the theatre. You get up and leave, your body and mind overflowing with that feel-good sensation.’
‘Bye,’ Genevieve yelled waving her free hand at you. Like Rebecca, she could not stop grinning.

Rebecca and Genevieve faced the author in his study. Their hair was looking terrific, their nails sparkled, and their eyelashes lashed.
‘What do you mean that wasn’t the ending,’ Rebecca shouted at him. ‘That was a perfectly good ending. The readers got what they wanted. We got what we wanted, and you’ve landed yourself with a best seller. Everyone was a winner.’
‘It isn’t quite that simple,’ he said. The tips of his fingers pressed together as he rested his elbows on the arms of his chair. ‘You’ve forgotten that the story that brought out your characters has not finished yet.’
‘Yes it bloody has,’ Rebecca said her face growing redder. ‘Grovijohn and White were caught trying to leave England on a ferry at Dover. They’ve been charged and are currently awaiting trial. Peter Hogland and Andrew Corphie, aka Hog and Corp, were killed in the final showdown where you let James and Conrad die. Almost all the artefacts and all thirty of the bearer bonds were recovered. What else can possibly need resolving?’
