‘No it isn’t,’ Genevieve said. ‘There are still unanswered questions that I know the reader wants to know about.’
‘Get out,’ the author said pointing to the door. ‘Both of you get out. The book is finished and the story is over.’
‘Weren’t you afraid that somebody may have taken the bible off the shelf and found the gun in it?’ Genevieve said not moving from where she was standing.
‘The bible’s dead. Religion is dead. Nobody has any interest in it anymore. It’s the least likely book to be opened in anybody’s house. Ask the reader. Ask them which book in their house is least likely to be picked up and opened. More often than not, it will be the bible. The human race has lost its faith. The safest place to hide something is in a bible. Not because God is protecting it but because nobody will ever look there or steal it.’
‘Don’t start on that polemic. We’re not interested in hearing about your lack of faith.’
‘You should be. It’s what this is all about. You’ve achieved everything you set out to achieve. You have what you want: Immortality. You’re going to live forever. Do you realise that forever is a very long time? You may become bored with yourselves after a few hundred years,’ the author said.
‘You’re forgetting that we’ll never age. In the minds of the readers we’re always going to be young, gorgeous and beautiful,’ Genevieve said.
‘And groovy,’ Rebecca added.
‘Yes, and hip and groovy,’ Genevieve agreed.
‘Don’t you want a child anymore?’ the author asked turning to face Genevieve.
‘No, not anymore. Children are real people’s answer to mortality and succession. As fictionals in a best seller we don’t need that.’
‘That’s just the point I was making,’ the author said a sly grin creeping across his face. ‘Religion promises us one thing. It promises us life after death. Look at all the religions and tell me what they all have in common. What’s the biggest drawing card they all have? It’s life after death. Not only is it life after death but usually a choice of heaven and hell. You follow their rules and you ascend to their nirvana. You break the laws they lay down and your carcass will burn in hell for eternity.
