Rebecca ran her fingers through her hair pulling it back and looping a scrunchie around it to form a ponytail. She leant forward with her elbows on the table and rested her chin in her hands. ‘I’m getting bored,’ she said. ‘Let’s make something happen. Let’s have some fun.’
‘Not just yet, we’re still setting the scene and establishing ourselves.’
I said this is boring. We need somebody here to liven up things. This is Joe’s Café. Where are all the celebrities that are supposed to be here?’
She looked around the restaurant and down to the door. People were starting to file in for their lunchtime bookings. ‘There,’ she said. ‘Look who’s just walked in. It’s that famous Hugh bloke. He’s been in loads of things. Maybe he’s what we need around here.’ Rebecca pushed herself into a half-stand and waved furiously towards the man she had just identified as Hugh.
‘Sit down,’ hissed the author between clenched teeth. ‘If you behave like that you’ll get us thrown out.’
Rebecca sat down. ‘You’re no fun,’ she said pouting and narrowing her eyes at him. ‘We need him.’
The maître d’ appeared. With a little bow and an obsequious smile, he pulled out a chair and seated Mr. Famous at the adjacent table. Rebecca’s hands were trembling. She glanced at Hugh before looking back at the author and making little squeaking noises. The author’s face had gone white and his hands clenched the sides of the table. He felt helpless, unable to control his Frankenstein’s Monster. Rebecca leant over to him. ‘Please, we have to include him in this. It’s too good an opportunity to miss. I’m begging you.’
‘No,’ the author said in a forced whisper.
Rebecca leant back and looked at him with large doleful eyes and fluttered her eyelashes. It was obvious that he was not going to budge. She pulled the scrunchie out of her hair, shook it free, and hooked the loose strands behind her ears. Turning to the side, she flashed a row of perfect white teeth at Hugh. ‘Hi,’ she said with a little giggle.
‘Hi,’ Hugh said looking a bit surprised.
‘My name’s Rebecca,’ she said stretching a slender arm across to his table.
‘Hugh,’ Hugh said taking her hand.
‘I know, you’re my favourite. I’ve always wanted to meet you and now it’s finally come true. You’re incredible, I can’t get enough of you.’
