A school of dolphins joined them for a while. James spun the wheel to try and bump them but they were too quick for him. You can never hit a pigeon with a car he mused. They always get out of the way just in time. He was enjoying the idyllic setting. Endless blue skies save for a few puffy white clouds on the starboard horizon. Deep blue waters rippling under the hulls. And of course there was Rebecca’s body. Yes, it was difficult to appreciate anything else while she lay there. James contemplated the cruelty of their predicament. The author had placed two healthy young men and one gorgeous woman on a boat together in paradise.
Conrad joined him at the helm interrupting his thoughts. Together, they silently admired the beauty in the net. ‘Have you noticed,’ James asked, ‘that I no longer suddenly fall asleep, like I used to, when the author goes to sleep? The narcolepsy’s disappeared. I still sometimes get moments of exhaustion but at least now, I don’t just drop off. Do you think it’s permanent?’
‘I don’t know. There’s no reason why it won’t start happening again. Let’s just keep quiet about it and hope the author hasn’t spotted his mistake. If it isn’t a mistake then let’s hope that it means that he’s developed you strongly enough to act during his sleep.’
‘Rebecca’s noticed it, she mentioned it to me recently,’ James said. ‘She hopes that it’s permanent. She says that I’m a bit heavy to carry around when I fall asleep. It could also be a liability in an emergency, especially on this boat.’
They stared across the sea in silence and watched as two pelicans, barely a foot off the ocean, flew behind the stern of the boat and off towards the horizon.
‘There’s something I’ve been meaning to ask you for a while,’ Conrad said turning to James. ‘Remember that book we were in, Don’t Sleep with your Brother’s Girlfriend?’
James nodded staring straight ahead.
‘You slept with Sebastian’s girlfriend, the identical twin to the one that you were dating?’
‘Hard to forget,’ James said before quickly adding: ‘but you do realise that it was a genuine mistake, don’t you?’
‘Yes, yes, that’s not what I’m concerned about. I just have a little curiosity question that I’d like to run by you. Could you tell, you know, during sex, the difference between them? I mean, was there any difference, you know, with the things she did, or were they identical even at that level?’
