Wild Fiction

Rebecca looked out into the inky waters around the boat. A chill ran down her spine. A large object, about eight feet in length was moving through the water giving off the same phosphorescent glow that James had created when he had jumped in. It looked like a blue illuminated torpedo making random turns.
‘Shark,’ Rebecca screamed jumping up and down pointing at the object. ‘Get out of the water there’s a shark.’
Conrad was standing next to her looking at where she was pointing. The blue torpedo shot across the water and then disappeared from sight.
‘What is up with her?’ James shouted from the front of the boat.
‘James old chap,’ Conrad said. ‘I think she has a point. I saw something move as well, although it seems to have disappeared now.’
‘Bollocks, you’re just trying to scare me.’
There were tears running down Rebecca’s face. ‘Please James, please get out of the water. I promise I’ve just seen a shark.’
‘How can you see a shark, it’s completely dark out there.’
The blue torpedo appeared again. It had halved its distance between where they had previously seen it and the boat. It was moving parallel to the boat, not getting any closer, but not moving away either. It made a turn towards the boat and halved the distance again before turning parallel to the boat once more.
‘James, she’s actually being serious and so am I. Get out of the water,’ Conrad’s voice was on the brink of panic.
This time James did not answer. He splashed and kicked furiously as he swam from the bow of the boat, between the hulls and towards the transom. The blue torpedo turned towards the boat again and picked up speed as it went straight under the port hull.
‘James,’ Rebecca let out a long wailing scream as she ran across the cockpit to the other side.
The blue torpedo reappeared on the starboard side of the boat and turned back towards the boat. James reached the transom and pulled himself up and out of the water. The blue torpedo came streaking across the stern of the boat and a glistening fin broke the surface. James sat huddled on the bottom of the transom, his arms wrapped around his knees, and watched it disappear into the middle of the lagoon.
Rebecca looped her arms around Conrad and cried into his chest. ‘That was too much for me,’ she said sobbing. ‘He’s trying to kill us.’
‘Who’s trying to kill us?’ Conrad asked her gently.
