Wild Fiction
‘Sure thing Corp,’ Hog said and fumbled with the rope eventually getting it free. He gave the powerboat such a solid push off that Corp almost pitched into the water and had to drop the Uzi and grab the side for support. He was back up with the gun in his hands and pointing at the fictionals before they had a chance to move. He brought the gun to his shoulder and aimed it directly at Conrad’s chest. Conrad’s body trembled and his mouth opened and closed. Dropping his aim to the waterline he squeezed the trigger, letting out a burst of rapid fire. Small explosions in the water accompanied the pneumatic sound of the machine gun fire and the tearing fibreglass as the bullets ripped through the hull just below the water line.
The sound hung in the air and drifting towards the boat was a cloud of grey cordite smoke that stung the fictionals’ nostrils when they tried to breathe.
Corp started the powerboat and swung it to the other side of the catamaran. He shouted at Hog and pointed at the other hull. Hog levelled his Uzi at the waterline and let rip with several rounds of high explosive fire. Corp smiled for the first time showing his yellow cigarette stained teeth. He pulled a packet of Lucky Strike out of his top pocket. He lit one and took three deep drags before taking it between his forefinger and thumb. ‘Senga bloody na lenga to you,’ he shouted at them and pushed the throttles forward. The stern of the powerboat dropped into the water briefly before it leaped out like an angry serpent and roared across the lagoon and back through the entrance.
Chapter 25
‘Becky, are you okay,’ Conrad said as he and James knelt down beside her.
‘Please don’t call me Becky, my name’s Rebecca.’
‘Cut the crap Rebecca we’re about to sink. Now are you okay?’
‘I think I’m okay,’ she said getting up and rubbing her arm and her shoulder.
Conrad felt her shoulder and joints. ‘I can’t feel anything dislocated or broken. It feels all right to me.’
‘Are you being a doctor again?’ she managed a weak smile at him.
He did not smile back, the boat was sinking fast and starting to list to the starboard side. ‘We have to move fast, everybody go in and get something important. I don’t know what yet but just look around and take anything you think we’ll need.’
