Wild Fiction

Suddenly there was a hissing and crackle coming from James’s hand and he threw the smoking radio away from him and into the water. It fizzled and hissed as it hit the water before sinking to rest on the sand two feet below.
‘Shit, bugger, bollocks,’ James said and walked into the water and kicked as hard as he could sending a spray of water towards where the mast was sticking out. He bent down, picked up the radio, and threw it as hard as he could at the mast. It hit the radar reflector, disintegrated into a flash of yellow plastic and silver metal, and sank into the water.
Conrad and Rebecca did not move. They sat and watched James beating the water and swearing. Once he had settled down and returned to sit on the beach, Conrad got up. ‘Let’s dive on the boat and see what we can salvage. There should be a dinghy or life raft on board, let’s see if we can find that. We’re also going to need blankets and sheets if we’re going to sleep on the island, not to mention a lighter, fuel, and basic camping necessities.
The rest of the morning was spent bringing bags of bits and pieces to the shore. By midday, they had retrieved everything they thought they could use. The beach looked like a scene from a castaway movie with brightly coloured clothes and sheets strung amongst the trees and bushes lining the shore.
‘Look what I have,’ Rebecca said. She opened a soggy handbag and pulled out an equally soggy folded manila envelope. She tried to open it but the water had stuck it together. Eventually, she succeeded in taking it apart at the seams and extracted the key and the all-important piece of paper.
Conrad looked over her shoulder at the piece of paper. ‘The writing’s all smudged. You can’t make anything out. That key’s useless without the account number and those other details.’
‘It’s okay,’ Rebecca said smiling up at him. ‘Have you forgotten that I have a photographic memory? At the top of the page were the initials B.J.F. which probably stand for Betelgeuse something Fullroy, the sort code is 45-21-36, the account number is 51648414 and the access PIN is 3154. Now I’m as important as the key, so you’re going to have to look after me very carefully.’
Conrad smiled at her. ‘Well done Becky,’ he said.
‘Call me Becky again and you’ll get this key up your nose,’ Rebecca glared at Conrad.
