‘Yes,’ Conrad said. ‘Sure thing...half an hour.’ He handed the receiver back to the author.
‘That was our very efficient WPC J. WAKEFIELD asking if we’d be so kind as to go in to the station and talk with our friend Mr. Ogilvie,’ Conrad said looking at Genevieve.
‘I’m not going anywhere today,’ Genevieve said. ‘Not after last night.’
‘I’ll go with you,’ James said.
‘I’ll take you there,’ the author said. ‘I need to get some stuff from town.’
‘What do you need to get?’ Genevieve asked looking directly at him.
‘The laser printer’s run out of paper and the toner cartridge needs replacing. I don’t have to justify myself to you,’ the author’s tone turned cool.
‘All right people,’ Conrad said. ‘Let’s focus on what we’re doing and cut the infighting. Rebecca, what are you going to do?’
‘I’m going to stay here with Genevieve and make sure she’s okay.’
Chapter 57
The girls stood next to each other in the driveway and waved as the yellow bug disappeared down the lane.
‘How are you feeling?’ Rebecca asked Genevieve turning and facing her. She put her hand out and took Genevieve’s bare arm. She rubbed it gently.
‘Tired and sore. The pregnancy is draining all my energy. My head is sore from being knocked and my arms feel bruised from being tied up.’
‘Are your lips all right from that masking tape across them?’ Rebecca raised her free hand to Genevieve’s lips and traced her fingers around her mouth.
‘My lips feel fine,’ Genevieve said smiling. ‘Feel this.’ She took Rebecca’s hand and placed it against her lower stomach. ‘Press there and tell me what you think.’
Rebecca pressed her hand against Genevieve’s stomach and then proceeded to rub it and feel around the area. ‘It’s very hard, very firm,’ she said after a while.
‘I know, I think it’s the little baby growing inside me that’s made it so hard,’ Genevieve said lifting the back of her hand to her mouth as she yawned.
‘Perhaps you should lie down,’ Rebecca said taking her by the hand and leading her into the house.
