‘I’m Jerry Ogilvie,’ he said to Rebecca putting his hand in her direction. She took it while keeping her eyes firmly fixed on his. Ogilvie broke the stare by inviting them to sit down.
‘We have a problem,’ he said. ‘We think that you know more than you’re letting on. I’m going to be up front with you. Some bearer bonds have been missing for a long time. Thirty million pounds worth, to be exact. One of them has just turned up. Somebody tried to present it for sale and we’ve detained him and we’re questioning him. Unfortunately he’s just a courier and we’re not making much progress with him. There are still twenty-nine of these bonds outstanding. We believe that Sir Betelgeuse Fullroy is controlling the recovery and distribution of these bonds from prison but we can’t pin anything on him. Do you have anything that may interest us?’ His eyes flicked between Rebecca and Genevieve.
Conrad rolled his head back and stared up at the ceiling before closing his eyes and breathing out deeply. Genevieve and Rebecca glanced at each other before they turned and spoke in unison.
‘Yes,’ they said and then looked at each other again.
‘Let me explain,’ Genevieve said. ‘We have the bonds and we can help you nail Fullroy but you have to guarantee us immunity for withholding the information about the bonds.’
‘You aren’t facing any charges,’ Ogilvie said looking straight into Genevieve’s eyes. ‘Just tell us everything you know.’ He pulled a yellow A4 pad in front of him, clicked the back of a ballpoint pen three times, and looked at the nib. ‘Go on,’ he said looking back up at her and placing the tip of the pen on the paper.
‘We have the other twenty-nine bonds...’
‘How did the single one become separated?’
Genevieve looked at Rebecca her eyes wide.
‘Do you want us to help you or not?’ Rebecca asked staring at Ogilvie. Ogilvie looked straight back at her and said nothing for a moment. He then turned back to Genevieve.
‘Just tell me the facts,’ he said to her.
‘As I said, we have the other twenty-nine bonds,’ she paused and reached over to a stack of five Styrofoam cups and pulled a jug of water towards her. She poured a cup, her hand shaking, and took a couple of sips. ‘We also know how Fullroy controls his operations from inside prison but we can’t tell you everything.’ Genevieve lifted her eyes from the cup and looked at Ogilvie. He looked back at her and nodded.
