‘They’re all part of the Armed Response Unit. They’re highly trained and skilled.’
‘What about Genevieve?’
‘There’ll be twenty-four hour surveillance provided for her as well.’
Rebecca cast a sullen look down the hallway and then fixed Ogilvie in the eyes.
‘So where are my bodyguards?’ she asked him.
‘They’re waiting outside. They’ll take you home when you’re ready. I’ll be with you until I hand you over to them.’
‘Let’s go,’ Rebecca said and followed Ogilvie to the two uniformed officers who were waiting outside.
Chapter 65
Rebecca stormed into the author’s study flinging the door open and knocking over a small table with a crash.
‘You bastard. You complete fucking bastard. You killed the boys and almost killed Genevieve. What about me? Not up to killing me are you? Or have you just not got around to it yet?’
She could feel her hands trembling in their tightly clenched fists next to her side. She was ready to hit him as hard as she could.
‘Do you have an answer for me or not?’ she screamed at him.
‘Listen, I’m sorry, I wanted it to be dramatic and I wanted to tie up the loose threads.’
‘Tie up the loose threads? You bastard, Conrad and James were only there to help you, they did everything for you, they were prepared to give their lives for you and you took them. You’re a selfish and inconsiderate son of a bitch. You don’t deserve recognition for this. This isn’t literature this is pulp.’
‘I never said this was going to be literature. It was always meant to be pulp and melodramatic and trashy. This book will go straight to paperback. It will never have a hardback edition. It’s like the movies that are “made for video.”’
‘My story will be in hardback. My story will be on The Times best seller list in hardback. There is nothing trashy about our lives. Get out of here. Get out of here now.’ Rebecca moved next to the author her whole body trembling, her fists clenched tight, and her face bright red.
The author pushed his chair away and backed towards the door and out into the hallway. Rebecca slammed the door in his face and turned the key in the lock.
