‘You’ve been shot in the stomach but it doesn’t look serious. The hole is very small and I think we can get you help. I don’t think you’re going to die.’
‘My stomach,’ Genevieve let out a wail. ‘The baby, what about the baby? Please don’t tell me I’m going to lose the baby.’ Tears washed down her face and Rebecca felt herself crying. She cradled Genevieve’s head in her lap.
‘An ambulance is on its way,’ a voice said flatly above her head. Rebecca looked up at Ogilvie who was standing over them, his pistol hanging limply in his hand. ‘I’m sorry,’ he added in the same flat tone.
Chapter 64
The ambulance arrived on the scene quickly. The medics prised Rebecca away from Genevieve but allowed her to ride in the back of the ambulance. Rebecca could not bring herself to look at Conrad before she left. Her stomach turned at the thought of what she had seen James go through. She hoped that Conrad had not taken as long to die as James had.
Rebecca remained in the hospital until Genevieve was out of the operating theatre and in intensive care. After much insistence, a nurse finally let Rebecca in to see Genevieve.
‘I heard that you lost the baby. I’m sorry,’ Rebecca said. She felt her lacrimal glands try to squeeze another tear out but they were empty.
‘So am I,’ Genevieve sniffled and turned her head to one side. Rebecca took her hand and squeezed it.
A senior nurse came up to them. ‘I’m afraid you’re going to have to leave now. She needs as much rest as possible.’
When Rebecca walked out of the I.C.U. she found Ogilvie waiting for her.
‘You bastard,’ she said. ‘You promised that nobody would get hurt.’
‘I’m sorry,’ Ogilvie said. ‘I’m trying to make sure that this doesn’t happen again.’
‘What do you mean?’
‘Fullroy escaped and he’s on the run. We haven’t managed to capture him yet,’ Ogilvie paused. ‘He’s at the top of the most wanted list and it’s only a matter of time before we get him. Meanwhile, we’re going to assign special protection to you. Until he’s caught you will always have a unit escorting you and watching your house.’
‘And you can guarantee that these men will keep me safe?’
