‘Yes,’ he said not looking up from his task. ‘A young fictional girl with a knife through her throat would be considered peculiar or out of the ordinary.’ He wiped the knife clean on the edge of the bread and gripped it in his fist. Rebecca backed against the window, staring at the knife.
‘You have nothing to fear from me, my dear,’ he said, the same evil grin stretched across his face. ‘I think that Fullroy will be able to do that far more efficiently than I could. Anyway, I’d never personally kill my darlings, not until I was completely finished with them, and with you, that might be a while. You may find you have more suffering in the offing.’
‘You bastard,’ she said.
He laughed a hollow and menacing laugh, picked up the piece of bread, and stuffed it into his mouth.
Chapter 68
In the afternoon, Rebecca visited Genevieve in hospital.
‘Have you seen the papers?’ Genevieve asked. She had been removed from intensive care and was now in a private room and propped up on several pillows.
‘No,’ Rebecca said. She was sitting on Genevieve’s bed holding her right hand. The other arm had a drip feeding into it.
‘Fullroy hasn’t been recaptured and they say he’s dangerous and shouldn’t be approached. There’s a lot of criticism from the press about him being in a category D prison and now that he’s escaped, they’re saying that he should have been in a more secure prison. The prison services say that he conned them into a category D prison by manipulating the psychologists. Apparently, he has a background in psychology. The papers are hinting that he may have bought his way into Ford Open Prison. Whatever they say, it doesn’t make any difference, he’s still very dangerous and you’re going to have to be very careful that he doesn’t come after you.’
Rebecca nodded at her and forced a smile. ‘I’ve already had that warning,’ she said. ‘The author told me. Although, not nearly as sweetly as you did.’
Genevieve squeezed her hand weakly. Her ashen skin stretched tightly across her face, her cheekbones stuck out in an anorexic cry for food. Her hand shook slightly. Under her eyes puffy folds of skin had developed. The shiny auburn hair was now a dull red lacklustre mop tied behind her head.
