Rebecca’s mobile phone chimed four times in succession from inside her handbag. She reached in, pulled it out, pressed the Navi key twice, and read the SMS to Genevieve.
I’ve approved
the book for
publication. It
would be good
to see u again.
When would u
like 2 meet?
Martin.
‘It’s going to come true isn’t it?’ Genevieve said grinning at her.
Rebecca smiled, nodded back, and tapped at the buttons before holding the phone to her ear. ‘I can meet you in thirty minutes... No, I’ll come and get you... Absolutely... Goodbye.’
‘Genevieve, darling,’ Rebecca said taking her hand in hers again. ‘I’m going to meet the editor. I’ll come back as soon as it’s over and tell you all about it.’ She leant forward and gave her a full kiss on the lips. They smiled at each other. Rebecca pulled herself away until just their fingertips were touching. When they parted she twiddled her fingers in a wave goodbye and turned and left.
Chapter 69
Martin Kent grabbed Rebecca by the arm as she was about to enter the Meta Publishing building. He had been waiting outside for her. In his other hand, he held a bunch of twelve red roses interspersed with gypsophila. Transparent cellophane surrounded the flowers and that in turn was wrapped tightly in navy blue paper. Small boxes and white ribbons patterned the wrapping paper.
‘These are for you,’ he said sticking out his podgy little hand, a beatific smile underlining his button nose.
