Wild Fiction

‘I have power of attorney to sign anything for him,’ she answered picking up a pen and signing the pages one by one. She handed the pages to Kent who counter signed them before handing the duplicate copy back to her.
Rebecca looked at herself in the mirror over the dresser. The distortion reflected someone that vaguely resembled the face she knew. It isn’t actually me here, she thought to herself. It’s my proxy standing in for me. I can do this because it’s someone else I see in the mirror. She saw the reflection of Kent walk over behind her, bend down, and kiss her neck. She could smell his garlic breath and feel his tight dry lips. She stiffened and held her breath.
He moved away and opened the bottle of champagne. Like the author, he professionally twisted the bottle and the gas escaped with a sharp hiss. He poured two glasses, allowing them both to overflow and wet the dresser. Rebecca watched and took one of the glasses from him when he offered it to her.
‘Cheers,’ he said smiling at her and holding his glass up. He was standing next to her and clinked his glass against hers.
‘Cheers,’ she said in a flat tone putting the glass to her mouth and taking a sip. She took another sip and then threw the rest of the glass down her throat.
Kent followed suit and refilled the glasses. Rebecca downed this glass without any preliminary testing sips and replaced her glass in the pool of spilt champagne. Kent smiled at her showing his dull yellow teeth. His beady eyes glistened and the glass trembled in his hand. He refilled their glasses and drank in time with Rebecca until the bottle was empty.
Rebecca felt a warm glow in her stomach. Her head had become light and her body relaxed. She thought about the Valium in her handbag. Valium and champagne, she thought to herself. A perfect combination for a situation like this.
‘I’m just going to the toilet,’ she said picking up her handbag. She closed the door, hitched up her skirt, pulled down her panties, and sat on the toilet. The bottle of Valium had two tablets left in it. She tapped one into the palm of her hand and put it on her tongue before spitting it out into her hand again. She dropped it, wet, back into the bottle and pushed the bottle into the bottom of her handbag. She wiped, flushed, washed and dried her hands before going back into the room.
Kent had stripped the cover off the bed and was lying under the sheet. His naked torso propped up by the pillows. His swollen belly partly hidden by the sheets.
