‘They’re our best chance,’ Conrad said. ‘It’s risky but I can’t see any alternatives.’They emerged from the shade of the trees and walked down to the edge of the water. Conrad waved at the fishermen. One of them noticed him, shouted at the others and waved back. The fishermen grinned at the group of three and waved.
‘Can you help us get to Belize?’ Conrad shouted in their direction. They continued to grin at him.
‘I’m going to swim out and talk to them,’ Conrad said. ‘You two wait here.’
Rebecca and James watched as his powerful strokes took him out to sea and towards the nets and the fishing boats. They could see him clinging to the side of one of the boats talking to the fishermen. After a while, he let go and swam back to the shore.
