Wild Fiction

More shots came from outside accompanied by a lot of shouting. Then there was the scream of a woman. Rebecca knew whose scream that was and pulled herself up and made her way to the door. Her ribs burnt with pain as she clutched at them. One of the windows to the room shattered as a bullet came through and smashed into an ornamental plate hanging on the wall.
The gunfire outside stopped but she could still hear men shouting. She forced herself out of the door. Conrad’s body hung motionless over the bench, the back of his shirt stained with blood. Genevieve was lying on her side but still moving. A sopping puddle of bright red arterial blood had already collected under her.
The white van with Ogilvie Plumbing written on the side of it was broadside on at the end of the lane. The side door was open and lying motionless in front of it on his back with his arms splayed out was the body of a policeman. His ‘Heckler & Koch’ still held in his hand, his face red with blood, his bulletproof vest uselessly covering his chest.
Ogilvie was standing over the bodies of Hog and Corp, his Glock 17 pointing at their inert corpses. ‘Where’s Fullroy,’ he shouted at Rebecca.
‘He’s gone out the back,’ Rebecca said in hoarse wheeze.
‘He’s out the back,’ Ogilvie shouted at the other two policemen in the yard. Both were dressed in black fatigues and like Ogilvie wore bulletproof vests. ‘Go, go, go,’ he yelled waving his free arm towards the side of the house. The policemen sprinted around the house and disappeared from sight.
Rebecca rushed over to where Genevieve lay and knelt next to her head. ‘Genevieve, it’s me, can you hear me?’
‘I’m dying,’ Genevieve said. ‘I’ve been shot. He’s killing us. Conrad’s dead and now I’m dying. What happened inside?’ Genevieve, doubled over on her side, held her stomach where the blood was coming from.
‘James is dead,’ Rebecca said.
‘He’s going to kill all of us Rebecca. Go, go now while you still have the chance. I’m going to die, leave me.’
‘Let me see,’ Rebecca said. ‘Where have you been hit?’
‘My stomach’s burning.’
‘Let me see,’ Rebecca repeated pulling Genevieve’s hands away from her stomach. The blood was coming from Genevieve’s abdomen. When Rebecca pulled away the clothing, she could see a small entry hole in her stomach.
